a fine start to mother's day

after a generous lie in (thank you steven and lilah), i came out to the living room to find the harris tweed pillows i'd been coveting sitting on our sofa!  (they are seriously lovely, too... and so cozy...)

but even better than the pillows was this beautiful card from lilah (who seems to have a gift for picking the right cards for the right person):

in case you can't read it, it says

Happy Mother's Day
Cause You Lo(r)ve Tea
Lilah
xxxxx

best mother's day ever!

another reason why steven is one of the good guys

glasgow, for those that don't know, is a hilly city.  there are neighbourhood streets that rival san francisco in their gradation.

on his walk home from work today, steven happened to notice a gentleman on the other side of the street in a wheelchair.  steven watched as the man waited at the crosswalk and then crossed the (flat) road.  upon reaching the other side of the street, however, the man just stopped.  he looked to be catching his breath, or gearing up for his next move.

his next move was up one of the steep glasgow hills.  and as steven walked on, he watched out of the corner of his eye as the man started up the hill.  steven was convinced that someone on the other side of the street would see that a fellow human being was in need of help and take it upon themselves to help him up the hill... but no one stopped.

and that pissed steven right off.

so he doubled back, crossed over the street, and went up to the man in the wheelchair, who was now sweating and out of breath from trying to get up this hill.  (he wasn't far, either.)

as soon as he asked if he could help, the man let out a huge sigh of relief, and started crying.

he explained that this was a new wheelchair, and it was much, much heavier than his old wheelchair.  and just the incline and the camber of the sidewalk were making it pretty much impossible for him to climb his hill.
and steven, being steven, just cracked a joke and made it seem like no big deal, took him up the hill, and continued his walk home.

lilah's first haircut

some would say it's about damn time, but lilah never asked for a haircut, and she has always been really good about getting her hair brushed twice a day, washed and dried a few times a week, and kept out of her face in nursery / swimming / and other activities.

but a few weeks ago, lilah started asking for a haircut.  she said she wanted short hair like fay's.

steven and i didn't want to make a big deal about it, as cutting hair for some children is quite traumatic.  hell, i remember feeling like the world had ended after i had my haircut really short one time as a child, and i didn't want lilah to experience that.

so although it was about 6 1/2 inches that our dear friend colette chopped off -- it's still long enough to pull back in a ponytail, braid, or swing around (like a princess).

and if she wants, she can still cut it shorter.

a very happy lilah and colette

she's such a big girl!

well done lilah
(she did get a lollipop at the end for doing such a good job)

thank you, as ever, colette, for taking such good care of our hair!
we love you!
