getting drunk on corn : a true story (August 3, 2012)

another round?  don't mind if i do!

(one too many at the bar, m'dearie)

she loves corn so much she'll eat its face off.

kicking the ball around with Papa Jon

there are many great things to be said about Nonni and Papa's house.

one of the best things ever, though, is the fact that there is a park (literally) in the backyard, and you can go play over there whenever a grown up will take you.

this video is Lilah's first time kicking a soccer ball around.

nice to have up -- for the record.

Lilah's new gear (August 1, 2012)

she loves it.

the beginning of the swimming (July 31, 2012)

Lilah spent most days in the pool from the beginning of August to the end of December.
She is officially a fish.
(like that?)

Here, she is a mermaid.
Although, if you ask her now, she is a girl, and she wants to swim with Orca whales.
Her favourite.

Lilah and Uncle Jim playing in the pool.
They can both do some pretty crazy dives off the diving board!

Not diving yet, but soon.

a californian education, part 1

Nonni's edible garden became Lilah's new classroom immediately.

Other activities that engaged her mind and body were soccer (football, I know), and swimming.

Papa Jon signed Lilah up for the Carmichael Squids, and even though Lilah had never experienced heat as intense as a Sacramento summer, she continuously gave her all (even when she had no idea what she was expected to be doing).

Eventually, Lilah learned that she didn't want the other team to kick the ball into her team's goal, so she would voluntarily run ahead of the swarming hive of kids, and put herself in goalie position.

The faces she would pull would scare even the toughest of Maori warriors.

Lilah was a good goalie.

July 25, 2012

Three planes later, and we arrived in Sacramento.

The next day, we started work on establishing ourselves in the States again (i.e.: mum got an iPhone and got hooked up with the elastic world between the west coast and the west of Scotland)...

On Day 3, we did what we had to do to really get into the swing of things:

We went to our fav fro-yo place in East Sac for their Cake Batter ice cream.

Welcome home, Lilah.

a long time coming

good morning, and happy april.

ah, what can i say... we've been busy for the past 8 months.

we've not been neglecting you.  never think that.

we have been working diligently at re-establishing normalcy after a minor shockwave split apart the tri-vectum that is the parfery-gerig clan... that's right.  we moved countries.  and only 2 of us came over together.

then we had to wait and watch as our right arm sat, trapped, behind bars in the relentless cold for what was to become one of the coldest winters in 50 years... and we waited and waited for papers to get filed and delivered, for the privatized postal system that Thatcher severely fucked up to deliver letters as it was expected to (didn't happen), for trains to leave and return on time, for extortionate medicals and mundane interviews, until one day, a letter arrived to say that yes, Steven Parfery has proved his worth and paid his dues and can now enter the USA as a Green Card holding resident.

and then we had to all remember what it was like to be a family together.  for 7 months is a long time to be a single mother, and to be a bachelor... and the two are not really related on any level...  but, as the good book says, the two of us are stubborn enough to see through the rough bits, and we know that we will come out the other side stronger and better if we work it out.

but wait... I'm getting ahead of myself...  you know the story ends well (so far), but you don't know yet what happened in between.  grant me a bit of freedom to play with your sense of time, and i'll indulge you with a thoroughly pictorial history of Lovely Lilah of Loch Lomond's transformation from young child to a true blue California girl.

(it's good to be back.  we've missed you.)
